The historic rationale for scholastic sports was to help
young people reach the higher ground of ethical behavior both
on and off the field of play. Our mission was to build champions,
not to win championships at any cost. Welcome to the Scholastic Sportsmanship Foundation (SSF), a non-profit, educational organization committed to the return of honor and character on America’s playing fields, positive change, and honoring student-athletes for integrity in scholastic athletics. The love of sports runs deep in America, and for generations, sports have shaped the character of American youth. The behavior of millions of student-athletes is dramatically influenced by the values conveyed by organized sports and their athlete role-models.
Today a crisis is brewing on our playing fields and in our gymnasiums. The time-honored principles of scholastic sports are under attack, and little is being done to turn the tide sweeping through our schools and communities. The very foundation of a great and cherished national tradition, scholastic athletics, is at risk. Athletes without honor, champions without character, and a win-at-all-cost mind-set have taken the spotlight and captured the imagination of our children. We must rekindle the flame and spirit of sportsmanship and fair play in our young people, or we may see that treasured light extinguished in our lifetimes.
